“Relocating to the South West was an easy decision to make.”

Acronyms are an IT and unified comms company based in Plymouth. They were founded in 2003 by Managing Director Dave Smith, as a reaction to what he believed was over-selling in the IT industry.

He relocated from the South East to start his business – a decision he found relatively easy.

“When I started Acronyms I was working with a business partner. We both agreed that we wanted to open the company in a place with plenty of business opportunities, but also somewhere people could enjoy the great outdoors. We wanted it to be somewhere future employees would not only enjoy working, but also living. Devon ticked all the boxes.”

Based at Plymouth Science Park, the company provide businesses with technical IT support, IT services such as networking and infrastructure, as well as communication services like VoIP telephony. They work with prominent Devon businesses such as the National Marine Aquarium and Paignton Zoo, but also have clients spread across the United Kingdom.

15 years since opening they now employ 18 members of staff and Managing Director Dave Smith believes that being based in Devon has helped his business flourish during that time.

“Despite some misconceptions, the South West is not merely a retirement home, or just simply a tourist destination. There are many passionate businesses owners here, that all contribute to a vibrant business community. Throw in the moors, the sea and of course, nearby Cornwall and Somerset, and Devon really is the perfect location for business owners to start a business and raise a family.”
