Devon has one of the country’s most active professional services sector, centering on the city of Exeter.

One, legal firm Stephens Scown LLP, took home nine national awards in 2017, including the prestigious UK Law Firm of the Year, secured at the British Legal Awards.

The firm is also amongst the most ‘loved’ of any legal business in the country.

In February 2018 Stephens Scown was once again in the Sunday Times 100 Best Mid Sized Companies to Work for, ranking 33rd.

“I’ve lived and worked in London, Sydney and Hong Kong, but I can honestly say I’ve never been happier or more fulfilled professionally than since I’ve been based in Devon,” says Robert Camp, managing partner.

Based solely on feedback from employees, the Sunday Times survey is widely recognised as the UK’s best barometer of staff engagement.  It is four years in a row now that Stephens Scown has appeared on the list.

The firm, with offices in Exeter, St Austell and Truro, is an incredibly innovative place to work.

“At Stephens Scown we have shown that a Devon-based firm can compete with the best nationally. Bringing the UK Law Firm of the Year title back to Devon was definitely a career highlight for me. There is a thriving business community and digital connections and improving transport links mean that we can work with clients across the UK. They see our location in Devon as an asset.”

Stephens Scown, which has seen its self-funded profits grow by 50 per cent since 2013, is the first large law firm in the UK to give all eligible members of staff an equal share in its profits. In a sector which has traditionally seen partners alone share in the profits, it is a move which has attracted interest from across the UK – and not just from within the legal profession.

“For our workforce, the chance to have a fulfilling career along with a brilliant quality of life is important. This is something that we have used successfully in our recruitment marketing. We are proud of our home in Devon and our staff enjoy sharing their tips on the best things to see and do through our Love Where You Live campaign.

” Other national accolades include Law Firm of the Year and Best Marketing Campaign awards at the Symphony Legal Awards and Modern Law Awards, Marketing Excellence Award at the Law Society Legal Excellence Awards, and, against professional services’ companies across all sectors, three awards including Best Managed National Firm at the Managing Partners’ Forum Awards. Onwards and upwards!
